Recovery: a reminder
Journey, Sermons January 16th, 2010On Saturday I had the distinct pleasure of preaching at Bloy House, Claremont, CA at a special Recovery Service. In reference to a theme of God’s abundance, I shared the experience of my own special healing which took place at St. Wilfrid of York Episcopal Church in Huntington Beach one Easter Sunday in 2002. Here is an excerpt from the sermon’s closing:
You see, my dear friends, I was not healed from my addiction, or the fact that I am alcoholic. The healing I received was from the worry that I could remain sober, that I could turn my life around, and that I might have the strength to do it. My healing centered on the serenity prayer, as from that day I could accept the things I could not change, and changed the things I can —— my growth continues as I try and discern the wisdom to know the difference. Through my magnificent experience with God, I realized that the essence of recovery is hope, gratitude and grace.
We are all, in essence, in recovery. We are in recovery from our own private weaknesses, and inner insecurities which hamper the essence of our being. We are in recovery from things done, and things left undone. We are in recovery together as we work to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ.
How priceless is your love, O God! As all people are invited to take refuge under the shadow of your wings; the abundant wings of hope, gratitude, and grace.
Thank you for letting me share.
