The birth of the Hesed

Image from the film The Nativity StoryThe Hebrew word Hesed is one of those words which is almost impossible to translate into English. One of the classic definitions I took from Wikipedia:

“Hesed is the Hebrew word for “kindness,” “love,” or “loving-kindness.” It is a central Jewish value, and leads to many particular commandments (mitzvot). Hesed is central to Jewish ethics and Jewish theology.”

Another way to understand Hesed is to use the African word Ubunto which means “I in you, and you in me”. In most cases we might think about the human race, but when we layer the Hesed, it can mean that God’s kindness, love, loving-kindness, God’s mercy is in God, and it is also shared with us, in us, and each other.

The Hesed was referenced by the prophets “For I desire Hesed [steadfast love] and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt-offerings.” (Hosea 6:6), and this untranslatable word is made known in the psalms, “But you, Yahweh, the Hesed is with me [ have mercy on me], and raise me up, that I may repay them.” (Psalm 41:10), these are just two of countless references.
